Powels claim to fame is being seen as a founding father of Welsh Historiography, in so far as his work and presentation of what is regarded as the first fully published History of Wales until Lloyd's 1911 History of Wales. However, Powel's Historie of Cambria, now called Wales first published in 1583 was very much presented in the ''Welsh Anglo - Saxon Protestant'' spirit, as you will see from the extract on David Powel in the National Biography of Wales. See link at end, suffice now to present some quotes:
.
''He rejoiced in the union with England, and averred that under it Wales was well ordered — lacking only a Bible in its own tongue. Yet he has no great love for the English people. If the Welsh fought with the English, ‘is it not natural to defend your purse against robbers ?’ — and he expatiates upon the wrongs done by March lords and royal officials in Wales. He has little to say on behalf of Owain Glyn Dwr, ‘who lived in a fool's paradise,’ and whose claim to the princely title was ‘altogether frivolous’ — indeed, he can spare Owain only a page'' .

Thus Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, 1282 and Owain Glyndwr came to be conveniently set aside and in time forgotten, much suiting those 'Taffy West Britons' who in 1715 and 1745 desired to perpetuate ''WASPism''. The later 19th century Cymru Fydd Anglo Politic Brit Imperialist aka ''Welsh Cultural Nationalists'' would see virtue in resurrecting Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, 1282 and all that! as means to advance their rather moderate devolutionist aspirations. However, Owain Glyndwr would not achieve his full resurrection until much later, post 1911 and publication of Lloyds History of Wales and in our own times by virtue of the writings of the Patriotic Bard Harri Web and of Gwynfor Evans in Aros Mae. Not least in our own times we also must appreciate the work of Cofiwn and Embassy Glyndwr to make of Owain Glyndwr the more fully recognised National Hero of Wales. As you will see from the quote below Powel set in stone centuries of confused Welsh thinking on their history. Nationalists today would reject Powels 'Cambrianism' and see as the true destiny and direction of Welsh Nationhood, not as Powel and other ''WASP CAMBRIANISTS''. The followers of Powel's ''Cambrianism'' sought Union with England but still wanted to retain some cosy Religious/Cultural Dimension now also associated with Political Devoluiton! For these reasons we may see this Welsh Tudor Historian as the Founding Father of Cambrianism, although it's my oppinion but open for discussion and debate, so think on it and talk about it. ''Writing as he did in the age of Elizabeth, he goes out of his way to show that Owain Tudur was no plebeian adventurer but a man of ancient and noble lineage. Yet, interestingly enough, it is not upon the Penmynydd ancestry that he bases his queen's and her father's right to the principality of Wales. To him, Llywelyn ap Iorwerth's heir was Dafydd ap Llywelyn to Gruffydd ap Llywelyn and his sons, Llywelyn and Dafydd, to Powel, were not in the legitimate succession; accordingly, on the death of Dafydd ap Llywelyn ap Iorwerth, his heir was his sister, Gwladus Ddu, whose rights descended to the Mortimer family (qq.v.). In other words, the claim of Henry VIII (and of Elizabeth) to the principality arose not from Henry VII, but from his queen, Elizabeth (Mortimer) of the house of York''.

All those Pro - Union Taffy Tossers, no doubt would agree with those sentiments which is why we must 'Cofia 11 Rhagfyr 1282' but really first and foremost it's to our national hero Owain Glyndwr and 'Cofia 21 Mehefin 1404' which in reality we must see as more worthy of our patriotic priorities. For Owain Glyndwr made sure that despite the attempts by such as Powel to bury him, we remember Owain Glyndwr as the great Liberator who on the 21 June 1404 not only restored our Sovereign Independence but also established a united CENEDL GLYNDWR - CENEDL CYMRU RYDD.
